Here's some interesting addiction tidbits:

*Cigarette smoking may *cause* depression in teenagers.

*Anti-depressant medications (especially the SSRI's such as Prozac or Paxil) may help people to quit smoking.

*Gambling addiction (and sexual, sports, and internet) addicitions are hard for some doctors to understand because there is no direct chemical effect upon the brain. However, these can be powerful addictions through positive reinforcement and as a way to cope with depression.

*Depression is linked to low seritonin levels in the brain. Some pleasurable experiences, such as sexual activity, or gambling, can raise those levels.

*Gambling addiction is often found concurrent with tobacco and alcohol use.

If Dean, or anyone else, has lost so much money gambling that they need to declare bankruptcy, or cannot meet bills--they need to see both a counselor/therapist and a physician. Such a person may be suffering from clinical depression, which has a physiological basis *and* they will also need to modify their own behavior and learn new sources of satisfaction that are not dangerous to them.
