Topic: Australian Moratorium Passed? Forum: Winner Online

Yes, the information that you have all heard is true.

In a ote this morning (6th December ACST), the Australian Senate passed the Interactive Gambling (Moratorium) Bill 2000 with an amendment that had been proposed by the Federal Government. The Bill is now likely to be passed by the House of Representatives this week and become law by the end of this year.

In essence, the Bill will introduce a moratorium on the introduction of new interactive gambling services. This moratorium will prevent the introduction of interactive gambling services not provided on or before 19 May 2000 and expires on 18 May 2001.

As a result of the Federal Government’s amendment, the moratorium will not apply to wagering and sportsbetting services. In other words, the services most likely to be caught by the moratorium are Internet casino games and Internet lotteries that were not provided before 19 May 2000.

A more comprehensive summary of the Bill will be circulated once it becomes law.
