Drink, drugs, sex, internet etc of themselves are not bad things, just as gambling is not, and addiction to them often arise out of personality or circumstantial factors. I have never thought otherwise.
But I would NEVER introduce someone to gambling because I know how seductive it has been for me and so many others who had never gambled pre-casino.

NZ got its first casino only 7 years ago giving rise to a lot of sudden gambling fatalities. My son, who has been to Vegas/Reno when on ski trips, says US gamblers there appear ery different as casinos have been available for much longer.

Here, I'm acquainted with dozens of people in financial strife because of land gambling; so many have lost their lifes savings; some have kids who end up without, due to habit, just like any other addiction. The Compulsive Gambling Assn is inundated and the gambling industry has just had taxes towards psychological services increased.

I counselled a 35-yr-old through 3 half-hearted suicide attempts after he had lost $140,000 obtained thro welfare fraud. He told me in confidence and truth to tell I think he deserves to be reported, but have never had the heart to do so! IMO people use the addiction excuse too readily! He banned himself for 2 years and did not DIE from the so-called "disease" but his bank stupidly offered him a pre-approved credit card, so he lost another $7000 which he now has to pay off. Indulged by father who lets him live in "best locality" apartment free, he doesn't work and lives on $200 a week provided by taxpayers. I have no sympathy anymore as he could easily ban himself again, but doesn't.

Hamilton, a small city 2 hours away has been given the go-ahead for NZ's fifth casino, despite a citizens group fighting hard to prevent it. I would certainly fight too having seen the social impact.

Slot machines have been proliferating in bars and clubs and government has just legislated to reduce the numbers allowed at enues.

Gambling is a wonderful interest if the gambler is in control.
