The Wall Street Journal ran a front page story today on why Sportingbet PLC *wants* to get taxed by the US government.
Nigel Payne, Sportingbet's CEO and Mark Blandford, founder of Sportingbet have paid US$500,000 to Washington lobbying firm Greenberg Traurig to lobby Congress to tax Sportingbet. They are even going so far as to launch an ad campaign this Wednesday in Washington DC area publications read by lawmakers featuring a British national who asks, "Please sir, can I pay tax?" They will also be lobbying other gaming companies at the Global Interactive Gaming Summit and Expo 2002 going on right now in Toronto to join their campaign.
So why does Sportingbet want to get taxed? The logic behind this play is that federal and/or state governments would have to setup Internet Gaming regulatory bodies to collect online gaming taxes, which would essentially legalize online gaming in the US.
I have never heard of a company or anyone for that matter lobby to get taxed, but I think this is a really positive step for the legalization of Internet gambling in the US.
