on this matter with me.
Introduced by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, H.R. 4777 would prohibit internet
gambling and crack down on the growing problem of illegal, off shore
gambling. Gambling is currently illegal in the United States unless
regulated by the states. However, with the development of the internet,
prohibitions and regulations governing gambling have been circumvented.
The tremendous amount of gambling websites from the Caribbean and
elsewhere are unlicensed, untaxed, and unregulated by any state, and thus
violate all 50 state laws in which they are available. These offshore
gambling businesses are often fronts for criminal and money laundering
enterprises.
H.R. 4777 has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary where
it awaits further consideration. As a member of the Judiciary Committee
and as a co-sponsor of H.R. 4777, I look forward to supporting this
important piece of legislation.
