I know this is an older thread but I just had to relate my recent experience with this game.
It Friday night and I was playing a dealer's choice game with some random friends and friends of friends. Some of the games called were 7 card stud, holdem, 5 card stud, 5 card draw, Guts, and In Between.
Well, "In Between" seems easy enough. Just basic gambling. But to add an extra twist to it, these folks play that you have to double your wager if you hit either of the two outside cards. For instance, if the outliers are 4 and J and you wager half the pot and the next card comes out J, you have to double your wager thus doubling the pot.
Well, I had done pretty well the first few times this game was called so I was feeling lucky. Before my turn came around, the lady to my right had bet pot on A 4 and hit an A. That tripled the pot to $22. (Keep in mind, this was just a friendly game with $.50 antes... not our regular weekly cash game). So my turn comes up and another A hits first (which gives you the option of declaring it low or high). I chose high and the second card comes out, 2. So the odds are the best they can possibly be and there's a LOT of money in the pot at this point. I quickly say "Pot!" and the person dealing pulls the next card off the deck, glances at it before laying it down, and his face just sinks... he lays it down and it's the last Ace in the deck. My stomach just dropped. Yeah, I've lost much more money in card hands before but this was just unreal. It wasn't so much the money as it was going from the feeling of certain winnings to complete loss. So I threw $44 into the pot and the game continued. Luckily, I was able to win it all back later in the evening but, for a bit there, I had the wind taken out of my sails.
What did I learn from that evening? Stick to REAL poker!
