t1riel - I do the same thing. I wait for a good hand - maybe with an A and higher card and give it a go. Sometimes, you need to do that just to double up and stay a bit longer in the tourney. Playing touneys is different than a single table money game. You don't have to accumulate chips to be a winner like you do in a tourney or freeroll. You can pick and choose the hands you want to get into. But in a tourney or freeroll you need to accumulate chips ... hopefully all of them!!
