Bad beats are part of the game. You never watch the WSOP or WPT without seeing one really great pro giving another really great pro a terrible sendoff. However, despite the cliche, perception is NOT necessarily reality. What you perceive to be a "bad beat" during a prolonged slump may actually be the natural consequences of playing a hand you never should have gotten involved with in the first place.

One way I kind of keep an eye on myself is to utilize the "Statistics" screen provided by most good poker rooms. Take a look during your session at your percentage of flops seen to hand dealt. Anything over 30% should be highly suspect. Also look at your percentage of calls to bets, raises, and reraises. A high percentage of calls can indicate that you're allowing others to dictate your actions. (Remember the old poker maxim: 'A bettor be, or a raiser be, but a caller never be.') These statistical red flags can really help you slow down, tighten up, and increase your wins.
