Hi all,
Yes I believe it's ery possible to make an income at playing poker, it does depend on what your playing. I think if your talking about playing multi-table tournaments then you probably couldn't earn a living at it unless you had firstly a nice bankroll and secondly you'd have to win at least two major tournaments per year to afford the "knockouts" you will inevitably get at a lot of multi-tables. When I say major tournaments i'm talking where the prize money exceeds $100,000.
On the other hand you could quite easily make a living at SNG's as you would come in the money a lot more of the time than at multi-tables, it's not unusual for me to make around $500 on a good day playing SNG's, a bad day at SNG's with not such a good bankroll would be down to around $50 to $100 but that's simply because i'm playing smaller $ tables and not so many.
I don't play as often as i'd like because I do a lot of other stuff but I certainly believe I could survive solely playing poker if I had to.
Tips:
I think the best way to start is to get whatever bankroll you can afford to lose, let's say you got $100 that you would probably spend at the pub/bar but decide to play poker instead. Because your bankroll is only $100 then you should only play $5 to $10 SNG's, you can't guarantee a win every time but you can be pretty sure of a place every time or at least 2 out of 3 games if your consistent. This means you have enough to enter 20 $5 SNG's or 10 $10 SNG's, play 5 games one day then 5 games the next day, if you've come in the money 7 out of 10 you should be in a fairly good profit, if you lose for 10 games in a row then forget about trying to play for a living, you just ain't good enough.
You can even try this at $1 SNG's just to try it out, $10 gives you 10 games, write down where you came each game and how much you won, if you came 1st 3 games for $6 and 2nd in 4 games for $4 and nowhere in 3 games that would give you $34.00 in total minus $10 = $24 profit, this is just an example I know there is like a 10c fee and the prize money is probably different but you get the picture. If you can make $24 profit playing $1 SNG's you can see how possible it is for me to make $500 in one day playing $50 SNG's.
Don't know if i've actually answered the question or just gone into one of my waffling posts ( probably ).
I bet there is quite a few here who make good money playing poker, they generally keep quiet about it, not sure why.
Good luck at the tables
