I agree with Bill 100% on this. Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from those of others? You will cut light years off your poker development by reading, re-reading, and regularly consulting really good books on the subject.

Be forewarned that the Sklansky books are ery cerebral and deal heavily with theory and probabilities. The tables which they contain are must-haves, but they're not light reading by any means. Super System is the hands-down "Bible" of modern poker. Get it. Period. (I continue to hear mixed reviews on Super System II, released late last year. I personally found it to be a good companion piece to the original, but in no way replaces it.)

Any books by Tom McEvoy or Phil Gordon are also nice additions to your library.
