"Technically you only want to use 5% of your roll at any given time!"

That`s common advice, but tough when you`re poor !!

Try this as a more practical alternative when the bankroll is smallish:

Use up to 20% (max) of the br as a buyin. Recalculate after any defeat. For example, with $10 available, buy in for $2 max. If you win, great - continue in the same way. If you lose and have only $8 left, buy in next time for a maximum of $1.60.

Operating this way, it takes a lot of successive defeats to bring you down to the level where you can no longer play and, if you`re that bad, maybe you should go fishing instead.
