Start playing poker for play money. If you play NL, don't push all-in preflop WITH ANY hand.
Go to a bookstore, and browse the poker books. Get one or more you like.
As you gain more experience, re-read the books, get more books, read more online and, obviously, continue playing online for play money until you have enough confidence to start playing the microlimits.
At play money tables, people play almost every hand. While this is not a correct way to play winning poker, it will give you a sense of the alue of hands in different situations.
