Check out chiptalk.net to fully see the chip collecting disease in action.
It can definitely be addicting, but I think it's all about BR management
I kept my per chip price to .25 or less. I bought my original 1000 piece set on eBay for $70 w/ shipping. They now charge $80 for the same set, but that's still only $.08/ea to your door. And these have actual denominations on them which makes it easier for casual players as they don't have to learn "my system of colors." They're not "casino" quality, but they're good enough for my friends and I. I especially like how They have no $ sign on them, so I can use them as dollars or cents depending if I want to have a cash game or a tourney. The top chip in the set was a 100 chip, so I used PokerShoppe to purchase my "color-up" chips. BTW, the set I purhased was one of the only sets I could find with a "10" denomination. Most of the time you only have a "5" and you use 2 fives for 10, but I like having the 10.
