First of all: Bad beats and suckouts - yeah, they do happen. Perhaps more so at low limit games, where people feel they can "affoard" to call to the river (can't compare to high limits or no limit myself, no experience). I have yet to find the tables where 9 people on average joins the flop and 5 of them stay to the river, though...
And though my sample size is small, I've been amazed to see how many hands - even multiway with big pots - my top pair/top kicker or overpair hands win. Yes, some people stay to the river even if I bet and raise consistantly all the way there - but they don't always make their draws (if they even had one). Often they draw to the river and fold to the last river bet. Or call when they are beat.
It feels like I haven't made a flush or straight all month (though I probably have, a couple); and yet my winnings are higher than ever.
I realise this can just be the opposite end of the downswings that are bound to happen, and that I am winning more than my "fair share" for a period of time. Still, this is not about amounts won - it's about "non-made" hands holding up.
I used to be very hesitant to keep betting when I had "only one pair" and there were multiple callers. I figgured someone had to have me beat. So maybe I checked the turn... and sometimes I would fold when someone else took up the betting... and I was laying down the best hand.
Just want to root some for the big pairs and similar hands - they are not always beat!
