I used to reason this way whenever someone bet out on the flop - that they had top pair and tried to protect it. This being a rainbow flop, he wasn't betting his 4-flush - which many like to bet out with if they flop it.

One hand that I have repeatedly seen being betted with from EP after the flop (apart from the PP the villain turned out to have in this hand) is Ax that paired the x. So in this case it would be A6 or A2. Not sure what the thinking behind doing so is (if any); but I guess it could be an attempt to build the pot hoping to hit an ace on the turn or river and getting plenty of action against a stronger ace with your two pair...

Anyway, not much point to this post since we already know what the guy had by now
