One of the previous posters had it right when they said that you should watch people when you've folded out of a hand. Don't let your attention wander if you're not in a particular hand.
The other way I dealt with the seemingly overwhelming task of reading everyone was to take one type of action and focus on it for that one session. After a couple of hours, you'll start to notice the tells almost subconciously. The human mind is a wonderful thing. Once you get the hang of it, you should just trust your gut. You might see someone reach for their stack out of your periphreal vision and know that you shouldn't limp in.
That's the first tell that I'd recommend that you watch for. Sit at the end of the table and watch everyone before it's their turn to act. Do they reach for their chips? How many do they grab? Are they already starting to muck their hand? I don't know how many blinds I've stolen because I noticed everyone to my left starting to muck before it's even their turn. This is valuable information when you are wondering what you should do with your marginal hands.
A lot of people even do it on later streets. Imagine that you're heads-up with someone and you are first to act. You glance sideways over at your opponent and see him holding his cards between his index and middle finger. Are you going to check? |
