Personally I don't think this is a good idea. Even if you credit yourself with making your standard "routine" decisions even during a really painful bad run, I am convinced it is -EV to play when you are in such a slump. Poker is never 100% easy decisions, and I believe even the very very best players are affected by bad runs/bad beats. They tilt.
I don't mean the loose-your-head-bet/raise-everything-aggression-tilt though (not many people go that ballistic); but I definately believe your decision making process is being affected. The fact that you came here to post about it, and the fact that you counted the number of times your aces got cracked, both suggest that you were getting emotional about the results (imho). That has to prevent you from making all the right calls that you can make while being 100% focused and poised. Even if you only err in small ways (maybe being a little bit less aggressive to "loose less" to suckouts) and in marginal situations - that is enough to affect your EV negatively.
Add to that the fact that you were dead tired for playing 10+ hours straight (and keeping going to 20 hours); and you are not allowing yourself the best possible circumstances to win.
When I responded to your original post, I had taken a beating at the Crypto tables. I felt I played my normal game, got into some battles that I didn't win, and it just felt like I was struggling uphill. I lost my buy-in at one table (which happens very very rarely); while I took smaller losses at the other two. When I lost the entire buy-in (raising and reraising with the last of my stack with AKs vs A9o preflop and loosing); I called it a night.
I haven't had a set rule for myself as Cha Ngo suggested, but I will consider it for the future. But I stop when I feel things are clearly not going my way, and I feel my temper is starting to slip due to the "bad beats" or "not catching a break"...
...came back today. Calm, focused, ready for some action. Went on an upswing that matched almost to the $ and the minute, what I was going through yesterday (but reversed). Personally, I don't think I'd have had any chance to pull that off if I had kept going last night.
If you can - good on ya. But I recommend taking a really serious look at your game during those bad periods - chances are you are leaking in non-obvious ways. Denial is a powerful tool though
Not sure what my initial point to posting was, I may have lost track during my ramblings. Good posts guys, always interesting to read about things like this. |
