Might be losing actually but not much definitely. I've been reading SSHE and trying to catch up as fast as I can. I am just wondering how long does it usually take to start winning in poker.
Reading SSHE is a the best way to start. I had already read his books on Stud and Theory. When I started Hold-on online, only because my son was making fun of me playing an old persons game"stud", I literally was reading SSHE while playing. I had the starting hands in front of me and tried to play stright by the book. I admit I was probably lucky and started off winning right away. It took thousands of hands before I really was able to understand what I was supposed to do in certain situations. It may take longer than that to really pick up what others are doing. I make a big portion of my hourly rate by winning the hands that get checked around the flop and turn. Knowing when to bet in these situations is more important then knowing to bet when you have the obvious best hand.
You may also want to get Ed Millers book which really give you an edge in low limit online games.
I don't think you need any great math ability in leaning when to call and fold in low limit games. Implied odds are very important in no limit but not nearly as important in limit ring games. I can't calculate my implied odds quick enough while I am playing. So what I did was memorize the important odds such as what you needed to stay in when trying to catch a flush or a strait.
Playing a lot of hands is key but you actually have to be working on something to make it worthwhile. Just playing will not make you a better player. Paying attention to the hands you lose that you should have folded may be the most important think you do. Go over those hands to see what your mistake was.
Buy pokertracker. It is worth every penny. I don't use it to track my play anymore but do use it to evaluate my opponents.
After using pokertracker and tracking your opponents for a while you will see the one factor in every winning player. Winners are aggressive. Losers are passive. You can't be afraid to raise preflop. You can't be afraid to raise postflop. If you are afraid to raise then you need to find another game. Strong players will push you around and you need to be ready to push back. |
