HEPFAP is the book I started with along with Theory of Poker. I wouldn't recommend those as starting books. The only reason I read them was not because I was actually playing at the time but I was a math and physics major.

Start with something simpler and then when you feel like you are starting to get it, read HEPFAP. I played B&M for a year before I really started having those 'AHA' moments over the more complex things in that book.
