My worry is that you are quite probably against the exact same straight AND that other bettors could have a redraw that is going to scoop you. The pot is relatively small at this point so why take the risk?
When I am playing PLO8, I am looking for opportunities to do the freerolling and avoiding giving others the chance. A side benefit of this is that the other players see me fold to large bets often and it gets them all excited when I am in a pot. Nothing better than having a nut-nut hand and having some chucklehead bet it for you.
Are we talking limit or PL? If it's PL you may have to drop it. One, you could be up against the same str8 which is correct but with a flush draw OR they hit a set with the same str8 and you now have to worry about the other player filling up or quading. Depending on how many people in the pot (if we are talking about limit here) then of course the more callers the better.
I agree with being able to let things go to a raise. I usually miss the old 2 gapper str8 on the board but a raise brings it right back to my immediate attention and I can toss my hand away. It pays off later, like you said, when your holding both the hi and lo nuts and letting Mr Over aggressive do the betting for you
