I think this is one of the more useless statements in the thread. Do you see why?

Hmm... HPFAP is designed for games where it is expected that your opponents are fairly reasonable opponents - not good players, but 2-4 players/flop is what the book is written around. It covers deception, trapping, free card plays - all the fundamentals and advanced theory required to play poker well.
SSH basically takes the core tenets of HPFAP and re-applies them to games where you are playing with a lot of really bad players, and how to handle those games in light of chasers, etc. In many respects, it simply re-iterates HPFAP information in a different way, taking into account the anticipated looseness of the games that SSH is targeted for.
I personally think SSH is a good "intermediate" book for people who have moved beyond WLLH (Lee Jones) and even ITH (Matthew Hilger). It takes you beyond the basics of those books (esp. WLLH, which teaches a fairly weak-tight strategy - still amazingly more successful than how most people play), and into the realms of heavy aggression. It teaches you concepts that will help you long-term, regardless of the games you are playing.
HPFAP basically is the "bible" for Hold'em... it covers all elements of the game, but targeting "normal" limit HE games more, where it is expected your opponents have a reasonable grasp of the game. It is, I believe, harder to read and understand, so it is really fits its "advanced" name... a lot of elements of "Theory of Poker" really creep into it, and although that book is the "bible" of all poker games, reading it is likely to give you a headache the first few passes. |
