It's intersting that starting with SSHE caused a lot of you to start losing. It was my 5th book and my win rate doubled after reading it. It does advocate betting and raising a lot and that might not be best when you don't understand when and how to push. Whatever you start with, though, once you are comforble with your game you should read it. I am sure I read in the book or something written by Miller or Sklansky that it wasn't a beginners book. I would also recommend Theory of Poker by Sklansky. I have been going through that book again and it has some great sections such as slow play, check raising and especially bluffing. It didn't help me much at first but make great sense now that I have been playing a while.

Someone mentioned getting away from Miller's loose play starting hands. Good advise. Start with the tight play hands and then adjust depending on the table. I have only been playing about 18 months and don't recall any tables with 6-8 players calling.
