Bonuses are drying up so it is best to hit them as soon as your ready. I made lower-mid 5 figures in my first year of doing this shit.
Next year it may not be possible to hit that.
Also the time value of money. I'd rather have 30 k now then 30k next year.
I don't think there is one person here who would disagree that it isn't worth working on the different bonuses - but the advice being given in this thread is a direct answer to the "should I quit my crappy after school job and play poker instead" - and given the information the OP provided, there isn't a chance I would recommend it. I'd be hard pressed to recommend it to ANY high school age person, not even getting into the legalities of it. (18+ for most sites.)
Playing poker as a living (even a partial living such as the OP is looking for) requires a deep commitment to the game, and a decent amount of experience to be successful - not even getting into the value of discipline required to make only absolutely required withdrawals and the patience to stay at a limit suitable for your bankroll and experience level. It isn't easy when you are on a losing slide for one or two weeks straight, and it takes effort to not only continue to play, but continue to play well during those times. That only comes from experience and a level of maturity that I'm comfortable in stating few 16-20 year olds have. (That isn't a reflection on the OP, just a general insight.)
I think the OP should continue his/her relatively new hobby - continue to learn the game, build the bankroll, clear the good bonuses out there in his/her spare time, without the pressure of making $$$ for anything else. In fact, making ANY withdrawals would be a mistake - the only withdrawals that should be made (and there should be few early on) should be going into some sort of personal savings. Is that fun? Heck no, of course not. But that type of discipline will help keep them on the growth path to higher limits, more lucrative bonuses, and better experience - and perhaps, with time and desire, a chance to try this for a living when they will know they really have the chops to succeed. |
