Zero risk, decent payout per table hour and valuable poker experience.

uggg....I HATE freerolls. To each his own, I guess, but best advice I've seen so far is from Alphaunit1. Play as a hobby to start and build your bankroll and your stakes. If, in a year, you still like it and are able to play at a higher level, then you can revist the question.

I've been playing for about 2 years as a whore. I make enough to pay the mortgage and build up some vacation fund money, but I still play mostly at the 2/4 level and below (just now starting 3/6 again.) If you have specific goals in mind, it is easier. 1K/month is doable, but probably not at the .5/1 level. Grow that bankroll and get into some of the 1/2 games after your roll is over 1K so you can clear bonuses faster and see if you can play at a higher level.

Also, get Poker Tracker. This will eliminate the need to take detailed notes on all the players as you will have ready access to their stats. Sure, you won't have typed in: "fish who calls to the river on bottom pair", but you will have stats like: goes to showdown 66% fo the time, wins 23% of the time. Just as valueable.
