I diagree. While I do find many movies to be better than the book(LOTR,Star Wars,Chronicles of Narnia),books will give you a different dimension that a movie otherwise would not.In LOTR for instance you will read about a character named Tom Bombardiar, and you will find out what happens to Aragorn and Awren after the war.In Star Wars there is always additional detail you would never hear(Vadar going into the temple and seeing the bloodstains on the war,Windu dubbing Kenobi the Master of Soresu, and of course added details in The Lion,The Witch, the Wardrobe, and the Warlock).
You hear that "woosh" go by your ear? That was the sound of the joke going right past your head.

I think Ken Warren,Lee Jones, and TJ Cloutier are unfortunately the B Team when it comes to book writing for poker.Skalansky,Miller,Malmuth,Ciarforne, and Hilger are def ahead in those respects.
I'd respectfully disagree with part of your statement. The two best books I've read for beginning poker players are Jones and Hilger. I usually recommend Jones because it is a far easier read to get through - Hilger does delve into some more advanced concepts IIRC that would make it a bit heavier for the newbie player.
Understand that this has little to do with a HIGH quality stategy book - we're talking about a starter book, something to help the newbie get a grasp of basic starting hands, position, and how to play different hands postflop with a reasonable level of success. Definitely NOT a book to help them beat $15/$30 online.
I have not read Ken Warren's book, so I can't comment on his specifically. Although I don't own a copy of any of his books yet (Middle Limit Holdem is on its way as we speak), Ciaffone does not write super-basic introductory books on a scale that Jones, etc. do.
Cloutier? Please. I LOVE the guy, but his books are written far too "loose" to be a good study guide for a new player. I've read some of his stuff, and there are great nuggets of wisdom and information in them, but there is a lot of crap to sift through to get to it. His "conversational" style of writing isn't bad to read, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it is ideal for a beginner.
Miller's SSHE, as I've stated many times previously, is a horrible beginner's book. It doesn't purport itself to be one either. It teaches a very aggressive attacking style of poker that has gotten far too many inexperienced players in trouble. I can't comment on GSHE - I've been meaning to pick it up and read it, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Slansky/Malmuth? Beginner/starter book? Tell me you're joking! Any book written by either or both of these guys are like reading text books - dense text, complex concepts, and a requirement to really think about what you are reading. About the only thing you accomplish handing that to a beginner is driving that player away from poker. I own many of their works, and although I do consider much of it truly the best books in my library (I read and reread many of them regularly), they are by NO means "starter" books - they are the books you graduate to when you get really serious about your game.
I think you really need to separate "fantastic poker strategy content" from "good beginner's content". With a game as complex as poker, you are not going to really be able to mix the two together - nor should you really try, as the concepts that make money as a beginner in low-limit games aren't the same ones you need when you graduate to the next levels.
I have one person here telling me SSHE is good and Alpha saying its bad. I guess I'll just have to try it to see for myself. Meanwhile I'll reread Lee Jone's book even though it has done me no good |
