In my estimation, you have committed more money to the pot to decduce the same information. I dunno if I would put the player on AQ, but based on the actions, I would have dumped on the turn knowing I was beat by one of the hands mentioned (KJ, 44). And for that matter, I like to open limp with hands like AK and AQ. Exactly for this reason. Raising OOP to take the pot right there has its place, but in this case, theres not enough in the pot to justify it here in my opinion.

Not necessarily a bigger Ace, but at least a hand worth calling a raise with. Whether that be a big Ace, or pocket pair, maybe a suited connector. It is the action on the flop and turn after the pre-flop raise that really let's you know what they're holding (with the exception of some really tricky players who will play back at you).
I want to make it clear that in the OP's situation, in the way he played it, I agree he should've folded on the turn.
I am arguing for playing pre-flop much differently.
I also think 350 TC in the pot is plenty to justify making a play for the pot at this level. It's a bit more than 1/20th your stack. That's 2 free orbits, and potentially much more if you hit your hand and get paid off.
Also, it's relatively cheap information on how your opponents will play certain hands. Wouldn't you want to know if they're tricky enough to limp with big aces in a developing multi-way pot for when you make a play at another pot later in the tourney? If you raise to 600 preflop, you're only risking 1/10th of your stack. Make the same move later, and that same 1/10th of your stack most likely increases significantly in importance later in the tourney (If you even have enough TC to make such a play later in the tourney).
In addition, if you win a bunch of small pots, it's the same as winning one big one TC wise. Granted, you may have table image problems if you play and win a bunch of small pots without showing down. Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, & Daniel Negraneu theory.
I will conceed that if you are DISCIPLINED enough to complete from the Small Blind with A10off, and muck it after that flop, then limping is preferable to raising. Again, I believe that a majority of players are NOT that disciplined in this situation, and raising pre-flop is preferable IF you are going to play the hand in this situation. |
