Unless a site worries about multiple accounts, collusion or underage players, i don't really see why they have to do this. Particularly if you withdraw to the same account (Neteller, Firepay, et al) where you have deposited from. Neteller and the like check out prospective account holders rather thoroughly.
My best guess is that it's an old habit that hasn't died.
Most of the poker rooms that ask for ID are attached to casinos. Back when Neteller's checking wasn't as stringent, casinos had a big problem: people were opening multiple Neteller accounts and playing the casino bonuses several times.
Sometimes those old habits don't die. Almost every casino still bans roulette for bonus play even though there is now no way to have a positive EV at most of these casinos by playing roulette. Why? In the past, you used to be able to make money by making zero-risk bets (betting on black, red, and zero at the same time). Now you have to wager so much money that this strategy is usually a money-loser. |
