Another point is that people who aren't knowledgable about poker see it as just another form of gambling, like blackjack or craps. They see it as entertainment and expect to lose. That leads to fishy, loose poker games. Once a player like that gets bored or goes broke, there is one less fish in the ocean.
Poker may become a victim of its own success, as those with the interest and ability become winning players and continue to play, and those without go broke or get bored. There has to be a steady stream of new fish to feed the legions of good players out there.
